DAILY DELIBERATIONS.1 23 SEPTEMBER 2024

Caterpillar is rolling back some of its DEI policies following an internal review, with senior leaders required to approve participation in external surveys and speakers. Caterpillar’s DEI rollback follows similar moves at Molson Coors, Lowe’s, John Deere, Ford and Tractor Supply. Come on folks. It’s common sense. You don’t shit where you eat. If you’re sellin’ frilly lacey stuff to the hoity-toity crowd, go ahead, read the room, and by all means, run the DEI flag up the pole if you think that’s what you need to do. However, if you’re sellin’ stuff to commonsensers, and you wanna KEEP sellin’ stuff, you need to drop DEI like a bad habit. Years ago, I heard of an heir apparent to a heavy equipment dealership. Upon learning he was going to take the reins, the first thing he did was to go out and buy himself a brand-new Porsche. When his Dad (still the actual owner of the business) saw it, he told him by God, you’re gonna be sellin’ loggin’ equipment to loggers. If you want to take over the company, take that foreign-made sonofabitch back and buy a Cadillac.
