NATIONAL NOTES 9 SEPTEMBER 2025

DoD could cut more waste by ending ‘use-it-or-lose-it” spending. Anybody who’s spent any time wearin’ a uniform knows what this’n’s about. It’s the same drill at the end of every fiscal year. You’re told if you have ANY money left in your budget, it needs to be spent before the end of the year, or risk havin’ your funds for the next year cut by that amount. The higher-ups’ logic bein’ that if we gave it to you, and you didn’t spend it, you obviously don’t need it. One particular example of this annual shopping spree comes to mind. At one of the places I was stationed, the people in the commanding general’s fixed-wing flight detachment had a bunch of dough they had to spend. They went on a spendin’ spree that’d put a Black Friday sale attendance to shame. It didn’t need it, but they paid to have the carpets replaced in his Cessna. When that was done, there was still money left, so they bought all new toolboxes for their aircraft mechanics.
