OREGON OBSERVATIONS.1 27 FEBRUARY 2026

Petitioners seek to create Eugene Clean Energy Fund by taxing retailers. It’d be one thing if they wanted to use this money to plug some of the budget holes they’ve already got, but apparently, they think investing in the wildly expensive and woefully inefficient forms of green energy is the way to go. How about they use it to solve the inevitable pissin’ contests over who has responsibility for what, between them and Lane County? The City of Eugene loves to annex outlyin’ areas into its Urban Growth Boundary to reap the income from the resultant tax and associated permint fees, but when called to rectify a problem in one of those areas, they constantly engage in a finger-pointing contest with the county – and vice versa. And it’s not JUST businesses. Trust me. We live in one of those described areas, and I’ve got file folders full of correspondence from both entities, sayin’ it’s the other one’s problem.
