Secretary of State Shemia Fagan announces resignation following weed consultation scandal. Email sent to Oregon’s governor, reprinted here with permission of the author: Re: Secretary of State vacancy. Here’s an idea: To unify the citizens of this state, you need to make a good-faith effort to share the reins of government by inserting a capable member of the opposite party into the chair vacated by its previous occupant. Continued failure to have an equal seat at the table will result in the entire state suffering Portland’s fate – an unprecedented exodus of businesses and the revenue they generate. To that end, there would be no grander gesture on your part than to appoint the person who received 43.21% of the vote in the 2020 election for Secretary of State: Senator Kim Thatcher. This would serve as a tremendous conciliatory gesture towards the minority party in this state’s government. As a native Oregonian who’s old enough to remember what it was like before 19% of the counties in this state had the votes to elect officials to state offices, I would hate to see my beloved Oregon turn into another California, New York, or Illinois: hemorrhaging voters, businesses, and their revenue.
