Eugene embraces exciting enhancements: City council commits $50 million for downtown development. I can’t wait till this fall when the recommendations come back after the staff study. It wouldn’t surprise me in the LEAST if the staff had a déjà vu moment and recommended they convert the entire downtown core into a pedestrian-only giant sidewalk like they did in the early ‘70s. It only took ‘em 31 years to realize they had made a mistake and completely reopened it to vehicular traffic. If you ever wondered why some of the streets in that area are paved with red bricks, it’s a holdover from the artsy-fartsy days that gave Hippieville its name.
