Oregon Board of Education continues suspension of essential skills graduation requirement. I don’t care how they spin it. The Oregon Department of Education’s suspension of the requirement for a student to know how to read and understand that 2 + 2 = 4 removes the bottom rungs from the ladder they need to climb to succeed in a career or life. Nobody should be surprised though. These are the same people who’ve been handing out trophies to a kid just for showing up. Not to overstate the obvious, but this failing impacts ALL career paths – not just attendance at an institute of higher learning. Suppose you’re not smart enough to determine the thickness of steel you’re fixin’ to weld, or how to read the numbers and scale of the welding machine’s amperage rheostat so you can achieve the proper penetration during the process. In that case, you’ll never get a job as a journeyman welder. You might as well give up and park cars for a living. Oh, wait. You won’t be able to read the letters on the shift selector to make vehicles go anywhere. So, when your kid can’t get a more challenging job than bagging groceries, you can thank the Oregon Department of Education and Democrats in general.
