OREGON OBSERVATIONS 16 APRIL 2024

Salem-Keizer Public Schools says 400 positions on chopping block. ‘Many of these expenditures went to District level staff and projects at the expense of our schools all while student enrollment was declining.’ For my regular readers, this is familiar territory. Another bloated school system is runnin’ out of Biden Bucks. They all got fat from using their share of the $5 trillion dollars of congresses’ inflation-causin’ COVID dollars, and now that the trough is almost empty, they’re havin’ to get rid of all the assistants and helper positions they created, in addition to actual teachers. Let’s pull back and look at the big picture. It boils down to bang for the buck. Allow me to illustrate: Assuming a dealership pays their salesmen a base salary, along with a per-sale commission, as they have less and less inventory to sell, they can no longer afford to have a football team-sized sales staff. Any organization, includin’ a school system or district, is subject to the greater economy’s landscape, along with the irrefutable fact: once prices (includin’ wages) go up, they never go down. During contract negotiations, unions hold a gun to the management’s head to get more money for their members, but when the money runs out and their members start losing jobs, the union’s nowhere to be found.
