Trump urges death penalty for all D.C. homicides: ‘Very strong preventative.’ That’s not the ONLY place that should be doin’ it. All the states that don’t allow it are drainin’ their taxpayers’ pockets. The average cost to keep a prisoner alive behind bars for one year is $43,000. Let’s assume the average life expectancy for a lifer is 40 years. That means the average cost for the expected duration of a life sentence is $1.72 million. Multiply that by the number of prisoners in the United States who’re serving life sentences (200,000), and it’s costin’ taxpayers $3.44 BILLION per year. The average cost of carryin’ out the death penalty (electric chair, lethal injection, etc.) is $2.25 MILLION. The cost of five .223 rounds for a five-man firing squad is $1.95, plus the labor cost of the members, and body disposal costs. Sounds like a no-brainer to me.
