NATIONAL NOTES 13 FEBRUARY 2025
US Treasury instructed by Trump to stop minting pennies, citing high production costs. The U.S. Mint reported losing $85.3 million in the 2024 fiscal year that ended in September on the nearly 3.2 billion pennies it produced. Nobody alive today remembers the 1/2 cent, which was discontinued in 1857 after a run of 64 years. Hangin’ on to it is more nostalgia than common sense, and nickels are next. The cost to produce a penny is 270% more than its value, and for nickles, the disparity is 180%. Bottom line? Hang on to those penny and nickel collections for your grandkids. They might have enough value to be worth somethin’ when they get to be your age.
