Tennessee man charged with felony reckless endangerment after returning fire on armed auto thieves. After reading the headlines, I (like others, I assume) initially concluded that the police seemed once again to be giving preferential treatment to the bad guys while trampling on the victim’s rights. But wait – dig a little deeper – read the WHOLE story. The homeowner was charged because, at 0230, his security camera alerted him to motion, so he walked out on a lighted porch with a weapon to confront the thieves. Discovering they’d been spotted, the bad guys started shooting at an illuminated target on an otherwise darkened porch. Stick with me now – this is where righteous victimhood takes a turn. At this point, realizing he was being shot at, the terrorized homeowner closed his eyes, pointed his weapon in the general direction of the would-be car thieves, and started squeezing off rounds. THAT’S where the reckless endangerment part comes in. For Christ’s sake! It’s combat training 101. His type of response is what gives gun owners a bad name. If you’ve made the conscious decision to buy a self-defense weapon, you need to know how to use it, and if you DON’T, get some training. Don’t stand on your front porch in the middle of the night and start sprayin’ and prayin’. Unless his house was in an isolated area, actions like his, on top of felony charges, could give birth to lawsuits for errant bullet holes in mailboxes, homes, vehicles, or, God forbid, innocent people.
