Colombian nationals spike US Army soldiers’ drinks before ripping them off, FBI says. This one caught my eye because it’s a reminder of the kinds of unscrupulous local nationals brought out by a foreign presence of DOD personnel. I might’ve told you this before, but the linked article underscores its continued relevance. During the Gulf War, I spent countless trips between our base close to the Iraqi border and the closest sizeable Arabian metropolitan area where we could purchase repair parts for our vehicles and heavy equipment. During those trips, I saw a few cargo trailers that’d been broken into, having been left on the side of the road because the tractor towing them had broken down and had itself been removed by a wrecker. I had turned in a 24V generator for repair and continually inquired about the repair’s status, as without it, we had a vehicle deadlined (inoperational). After about a week, I asked again and was told their repair shop had finished rewinding the generator, and he presented me with a cardboard box. Inside was a brand-new Leece-Neville generator, still covered in cosmoline. It was obvious to me that it had been stolen from one of the trailers I had seen sittin’ on the shoulder, and now he was charging me a couple of hundred bucks for it.
