The SECOND thing you need to know is that they won’t exactly fly off the shelf at an initial estimated price of $250,000 apiece. The reason should be obvious. Assuming the average warehouse worker makes $18 an hour, their annual wages and benefits package will cost a company $50,000 annually if they aren’t injured in an on-the-job accident. Working at the same rate as a human, It’d take 5 years to break even. Even if Digit produced twice as much as its human counterpart, balancing the investment would take 2 ½ years. In the plus column, the robot wouldn’t suffer any attendance issues and would no doubt have a better efficiency rating (no breaks, lunch hours, etc.). We’ll have to keep our eye on this one.
