OREGON OBSERVATIONS 7 OCTOBER 2022

Mixed in with all the boneheaded bleeding-heart initiatives on the ballot this year will be Measure 112, and here is what it boils down to: “authorizes an Oregon court or a probation or parole agency to order alternatives to incarceration for a convicted individual.” Those of you who’re smart enough to see through a Measure title that has woke progressive rhetoric dripping from each word can see that this is REALLY about changing the state’s constitution so that nobody will go to jail for anything. I can see it now. If this thing passes, the drunk behind the wheel, which causes a wreck that puts somebody in a wheelchair for the rest of their life, won’t go to jail – they’ll be sentenced to attend AA meetings and counseling sessions. The punk who knocks somebody over the head and steals everything they’ve got won’t see the inside of a cell – they’ll be assigned counseling and community service. In the real world, this approach doesn’t work. The only thing it might do is increase the population of bums that the state and local governments allow to sleep on the sidewalks our tax dollars paid for, blocking their use by pedestrians. VOTE NO ON MEASURE 112.
