They only read the license plates, people. If you wanna bitch about cameras and privacy issues, go live in Germany for a while. The stealthy traffic cameras they use move around. I’ve seen ’em on little tripods next to the railing of an overpass (where they blend in and’re hard to detect), with a wire leading down to a control vehicle parked outta sight under the overpass. When THEIR speed trap cameras capture images, the police send a photographic print to the address associated with the license plate number, which includes a clear picture of the license plate, the posted speed, the vehicle’s speed, and the driver, along with any other occupant of the front seat. I shouldn’t have to tell you what happens when that envelope’s opened by half of the married couple, who sees their betrothed rolling through a speed trap snuggled up in the front seat beside the person they’re havin’ an affair with.
